Looking for private onsen/family baths in Beppu? Here’s my list of favorite and affordable private onsens (family baths) in Beppu. I’ll also share how to get there, prices, and how to make reservations.
I often go to Beppu and when I’m with my parents or partner, I often book a private onsen so we can wear bathing suits and enjoy the bath together. My favorite private onsens are outdoors—there’s nothing better than soaking in a hot spring while it’s slightly chilly or even raining.
Top 3 favorite private onsens in Beppu:
- Hyotan Onsen – Over 14 private baths to choose from, partly outside and partly inside.
- Hidamari Onsen Hana no Yu – Private onsens built in a greenhouse—magical and popular with locals.
- Shibaseki Onsen – A hidden gem on a mountain, offering an almost-outdoor experience.
- Bonus Backup: Yumetamatebako Onsen – If the others are full, this spot usually has availability. It’s not as scenic, but it’s a reliable option.

1. Hyotan Onsen with 14 private baths:
Hyotan Onsen is one of the most popular onsens in Beppu, featuring a large complex for both men and women. In addition, they offer 14 private onsens, making it my top spot to bring first-time visitors. You can choose from the 14 baths, but they tend to book up quickly.
If you have a specific bath in mind, it’s best to call ahead or visit in person to make a reservation. Their English isn’t strong, so in-person booking is recommended.
Each private onsen includes a mini sauna and sometimes multiple shower stations. The water is perfect, and most baths are made of rocks.

2. Hidamari Onsen Hana no Yu, Onsen in a Greenhouse:
This hidden spot is beautiful and unique, with private onsen baths built into a greenhouse. Each room has a slightly different theme—ours featured orchids, while another time we had an aquarium. The private onsen includes a changing room, shower station, and a massage water shower.
It’s a fun experience, especially for those staying longer in Beppu and wanting to try different types of onsens. However, it’s popular with locals, so you may need to wait about 20 minutes for a bath to become available.

3. Shibaseki, Onsen on a mountain top:
Shibaseki Onsen offers a relaxing escape with spacious indoor private bath, allowing you to open the windows. There is also the standard separate onsen for women and men. The blend of indoor comfort and outdoor air makes it a perfect spot to enjoy a soothing soak. The onsen is tucked away in the mountains/hills of Beppu.
To reach Shibaseki Onsen, it’s recommended to come by car or (electric) bike, as public transportation options are limited and getting here otherwise may be too difficult.
